For customers that desire SIP Trunking for telephone service, but for whom a new IP based system doesn't fit current plans, a SIP Gateway can be used in order to bridge the SIP Trunking service to the old PBX or KSU. A SIP gateway, in its purest form, is a router that converts analog or digital signals to SIP signals, i.e., it converts them from an IP based format to a TDM-based (time division multiplexed) format (and vice versa). The gateway works very much like a channel bank does. Channel banks convert digital to analog. SIP Gateways convert digital or analog to VoIP (only they cost lots less than channel banks). Simple.
