SIP Switching is the routing of SIP (IP based) phone calls by IP addresses to their intended locations.  A PSTN gateway converts the call from SIP to a traditional PSTN format (PRI, POTS, etc.) and passes it to the PSTN switching architecture where it can find its intended dialed location.

"On-net" calls can be routed through the carrier's network at no cost to other on-net subscribers.  Off-net calls can be routed through carrier-grade gateways for interconnection with TDM network providers.  LD calls will terminate via interconnection with the Tier 1 carrier's PSTN-based interconnection facilities.
